Gray for Days

Gray for Days

British Vogue has recently celebrated it’s first century. Today we’ll take a peak behind the scenes at the inner workings of the UK magazine.

While very few people haven’t heard about American Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, her British counterpart Sarah Harris couldn’t be more different. But still, some find similar points between the two, Harris being an ambassador for minimal fashion.

34 years old Harris has been working at Vogue for the past 12 years. Besides being an important fashion editor, she’s also a style authority and a tastemaker.

She refrains almost entirely from trends and gimmicks, and sticks to her own sense of style and her signature look – her silver mane of hair.

And one more frontal look:

You will very rarely find her in anything other than the black/white/navy/khaki variety. Burgundy at her most adventurous. You will never catch her in prints or patterns, stripes at the most – and good luck even with that. Her personal style is very well-documented all across the blogosphere, but fashion choices take only the second place to her hair. And her hair? Oh, she keeps it long, sleek, straight, and – yes, gray.

Sarah was 16 when she started discovering silver strands in her hair. At first, she would still join her mother and get her hair dyed. But very quickly she decided to give up and adopt the silver foxtress look (give up? we guess she might have just decided to ideologically adopt the slow living California lifestyle…)

In a world constantly worshipping youth an ombre, it’s no wonder her silver look has become a statement, speaking to confidence that sets her apart as an icon.

Since 2015, gray hair has become a trend unto itself. Harvey Nichols, the renown fashion house, was among the first to lead the way.

Harris says that even today, she’s still being stopped at the street and asked about her hair color and how she reached the exact hue. People are sure this was a deliberate choice made by hair, not nature.

And honestly, Harris does love the rebelliousness of her hair. As she puts it: it’s at once honest and non-conforming.

She usually leaves it be with a center part. But sometimes she gathers it into a high ponytail:

Just look at this chic. In the most nonchalant way:

So – how about you? Would you incorporate some silver in your wig?

Only time will tell…
